A stucco figure of Hariti, Ancient region of Gandhara
2nd – 3rd century AD
Hight 30 cm
A beautiful modelled Hariti, the Gandharan Goddess of Fertility and Childbirth. Hariti was originally an Iranic-Zoroastrian ogress who used to devour children, but after the arrival of Buddhism in Gandhara, she was transformed (“converted”) to a Buddhist figure of protection and parenting.
This sculptor reflects the style of classical Greco-Roman sculpture; exquisitely rendered contours of the body, the ripples of the hair and the folds of the drapery, which fall rhythmically across the torso and legs.
